Hattie Long traveled all over the United States, and she never went anywhere without her rock hammer. On a tour of New York City, Hattie realized that the group would be leaving early in the morning. She wanted rocks from Central Park, so she invaded the park at midnight with her rock hammer…The story goes that those nocturnal – and probably illegal – specimens are in this very box. When Hattie returned to White Bear Lake in 1935, she was able to indulge her passion for geology and travel. She was a charter member of the Minnesota Geological Society, and in April of 1939 organized the White Bear Lake Chapter.
