The Grand Piano

This Steinway Concert Grand Piano was purchased by Hallie Fillebrown in 1923 from Dyer Bros in St. Paul for her daughter Helen. Bargain shoppers that they were, the mother-daughter pair set out for a secondhand Grand and paid $700 for this one to be refurbished (that would equate to $12,705 in 2024).

Note the two pedals instead of three – that development was still ten years away! This helps us date the piano and tells us that it was made in 1862.

Placed in the heart of the Fillebrown Cottage, this piano was the “recital” piano for all of Helen’s piano students during many recitals held at the Fillebrown while Helen was still teaching. To this day, the Steinway remains a priority to the Historical Society and is tuned annually so it’s golden tones can delight all who listen and play!
