The Pollywog | Kitchen
In late winter 1920, the Pollywog was repurposed as the kitchen, studio, hallway, bathroom, and pantry of the Fillebrown House. Helen Fillebrown recalled it being moved across the yard, likely on sled runners.
Before the stairwell was moved in the 1940s, the windows would have opened up to a screen porch. The porch would be enclosed and winterized to provide another hallway to eliminate the congestion that likely occurred in this incredibly busy home.
Boarders were required to cook their own meals according to a strict schedule.
The Kitchen remains as it was when the Fillebrowns acquired the property.
Other items to note:
- The stove is our “newest addition” and is a fully functional restored stove from the 1880s.
- The sink is soapstone and was brought from Boston when the cottage was built.
- The table in the center of the room is an Irish spool-leg that is about 150 years old.
- You’ll notice the extensive china collection the Fillebrown house has collected – this is a nod to the tearoom Helen and her friends ran from 1934 to 1937. They would come to find out the Fillebrown home was NOT correctly zoned for such a business and shut down quickly.
